The Heart of Harmony: The London Kids Community Gospel Choir
When Haddie Wallace was just seven years old, she dreamed of creating a space where children could come together to sing gospel music. With her mother, Achlaï Ernest Wallace, a music educator and psychotherapist, by her side, that dream transformed into reality with the birth of the London Kids Community Gospel Choir.
The Joy of Gospel Music
Gospel music is more than just a genre; it’s a profound expression of hope, resilience, and community. Haddie reflects on this sentiment beautifully: “The thing that I love about gospel music is the three-part harmony, the joyous sounds, the choir — how every single section has their part to sing together.” The choir’s membership has flourished, expanding from a modest seven children to an enthusiastic group of thirty-five kids, aged seven to seventeen. As they sing together, they not only lift their voices but also their spirits, discovering newfound confidence.
Cultivating Confidence and Community
Haddie has started taking on roles beyond just being a choir member; she is now a blossoming conductor, already conducting songs herself. She observes the transformation in her peers: “A lot of times, I see kids that come in very shy, and my mom lets them come out of their shell. I love that about her.” For Haddie, the focus and consistency instilled in the children by Achlaï foster a nurturing environment for musical and personal growth. “She may be strict, but she always does it for the better, for our confidence and for our growth musically,” she adds, highlighting the deep bond between mother and daughter.
A Legacy of Musical Tradition
Achlaï describes her journey with the choir as “gratifying.” She emphasizes the historical significance of gospel music, which has deep roots in the African American experience. “The beauty of song has always kept carrying those people,” she notes. “I think it still resonates today because their blood flows through my veins. It’s part of my history.”
She articulates the essence of gospel music: “I love gospel music because it’s about overcoming hardship. It’s about joy in the midst of struggles, about joy in the midst of suffering.” This message resonates with the choir members, instilling a sense of purpose and mental wellness alongside their musical endeavors.
Diverse Voices, Shared Missions
Among the choir members, Chinedu Godwin-Njoku, 12, shares his personal growth story. Skeptical at first, Chinedu eventually found joy in singing. “At first, I was skeptical because I’ve never been to a choir before. But after a while, I started to get used to it, and honestly, it got really fun.” He expresses a genuine sense of pride in using his voice to contribute meaningfully during Black History Month events, reflecting the choir’s commitment to community and service.
Abhishek Omondi, 13, another vibrant member of the choir, has also experienced significant personal growth. He recalls how performing has changed him: “I don’t feel shy in crowds anymore, and also I can use my voice to its fullest potential.” The elation of singing in harmony is a transformative experience for him, one that he cherishes deeply.
More Than Music: A Family
For Haddie, being part of the choir is not just about making music; it’s about building relationships. “We don’t just sing for fun. We sing to declare the message, to declare the gospel. We have joy. We laugh, we dance, we cry. It’s fun. We love to tease each other lovingly. We love to love each other. It’s a family,” she emphasizes, showcasing the nurturing environment the choir fosters.
The London Kids Community Gospel Choir is not only a space for musical education; it’s a haven for emotional growth, community involvement, and, most importantly, joy. Children aged seven to seventeen interested in joining this vibrant musical family can keep an eye out for upcoming auditions, with concerts lined up for February and March, highlighting the choir’s dynamic presence in the London community.
For those intrigued by the power and significance of gospel music and community, the London Kids Community Gospel Choir stands as a beacon of hope, unity, and boundless harmony.
